Kootenay Backcountry Provides!

Do you like powder? I like powder.  Who doesn’t like a good pow day?  Exactly.   Well, if all that powder talk got your heart buzzing, I highly suggest you take a trip out to the Kootenay region located in beautiful British Columbia.

Our living arrangements were contained in that mobile storage unit. It was cold, but character building. Would I do it again? Hell yea!

My boyfriend, Riley, and I recently spent some time splitboarding there for our first time in an attempt to see what all the hype was. Two words: Worth it.  It was like riding through sugar clouds! ..Did I really just use the term sugar clouds?  Apparently that’s how my brain interprets the magic of this snow.  I couldn’t even contain my excitement because I was just so stoked to be riding in such prime terrain with awesome snow!  I’m currently living on the coast of BC, and while we do get some epic powder days, our snow is often damp and heavy – so this was as close to the legendary ‘Japan Pow’ that I have ever been.

Nelson Backcountry.

Nelson Backcountry.

We spent our first day at the Whitewater Resort in Nelson and then one day roaming the backcountry.  Great tree runs, no lift lines, and lots of super cool people. Whitewater Resort was a great mountain.  The backcountry was awesome too, once we got off the skin track and hit the slope that didn’t get baked in the sun all day.  There were smiles, and shouts of excitement through the duration of our run 🙂

Soon enough, we were en route to Fernie’s resort.  While we didn’t have great snow there, the mountain was friendly, such a big variety of terrain to explore,

“Good things come to those who wait.”

Not likely!
Good things come to those who get off their butt, and search for it.  We found some powder after our pow senses guided us to some untouched snow, so that was pretty cool. After a great day at Fernie. we headed on our way to Banff for a rest day spent sightseeing, light touring, and eating.  (lots of eating)

My most memorable, and the most beautiful place we traveled to, I’d have to say goes to Roger’s Pass.  We hiked for about 4.5 hours until we reached our destination and spent two nights at the ACC Asulkan Hut.  It was pretty expensive with all the passes you have to purchase just to be in the area, but all was soon forgotten once we reached the hut.  It was a 900m elevation gain to pure bliss.  Highly recommended to any traveling within the area and looking for some solid backcountry riding.  My splitboard was very happy.. as was my heart!

Then, last but most certainly not least – we hit  … *drum roll* .. REVELSTOKE!

What an awesome mountain!  It was our first solid powder day of the trip, and the perfect end to it.  Revelstoke showed us grand time and the tree skiing was mind blowing. You gotta hit Revy on a powder day, it’s just too good.  Also, if this post motivates you to make a trip to Revy, be sure to hit “The Village Idiot” for some food after.  It’s a great pub with good eats!

HAPPY POW HUNTING!

Words of Advice

  • Buy everything online – ahead of time.  You will save money and your wallet will thank you.
  • Take advantage of traveling during oil recession. Seriously. Gas in Alberta was 87 cents per gallon. Just let that one sink in for a moment..
  • Always know before you go!  Check out the terrain in advance, and be sure to plan in accordance with avalanche bulletins.. and don’t be afraid to ask locals for assistance, most are happy to help.
    Great trip. Happy Hearts.
